BUILDING PHENOMENA OBSERVATION/DOCUMENTATION
ARCH231 - Architecture and Cultural History II
The second course in a series tracing the history of Western culture through its architecture from the early Paleolithic Age to the 20th century.
Activity
Students, in teams of 3-5, are tasked with visiting various religious/ritual spaces in and around the Portland-Metro area. Through a number of visits consisting of observations and potential interviews, the groups create diagrams, in plan and section, illustrating various building phenomena such as program, circulation, sound, and light. In addition, students also take photos and record video to compose into a 3-minute movie about a specific theme relating to the space. Having learned about the various religious spaces through traditional lecture formats, the students gain an additional, first-hand understanding of how the spaces actually operate, in turn allowing for a synthesis and analysis of the differences and similarities between actual and "canonical" spaces. Additionally, by visiting different spaces meant for the same religion/ritual, students come to understand the importance of adapting spaces to meet needs and how the same ends can be achieved through different means, translating into multiple solutions for the same problem in architectural designs.
